The result of the Allegrini family’s expertise, a true classic of the appellation, this red wine embraces tradition, territory and the know-how of country ways. The lengthy refining and ageing yields a red wine that has become emblematic of Italian oenology, alongside Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino. It has imposing structure and depth, as much in its aromas of mature fruit and spices, as on the palate, where the alcohol is sustained by the right degree of acidity and refined tannins. We suggest to serve this wine at 18 °C and open the bottle an hour before drinking. This Amarone has the potential to age for more than 20 years.

In our best and oldest vineyards we make a manual harvesting in boxes and an exhaustive selection in the field and in the winery, obtaining grapes of great quality. Once in the winery the grapes are macerated in cold for an improvement of the alcoholic fermentation, which will be carried out in French oak vats. Then there is a two-year aging in French and American oak barrels, ending the process with a bottle aging in our century-old cellars until it goes to market.

Intense garnet color with bluish notes on the meniscus. In the nose we discover a perfect aromatic balance where the fruits of the forest and licorice stand out along with the aromas from pine, cigar leaf and sweet spices. Through the palate it is marked by a soft tannin followed by a long and elegant finish, which leads us to a balsamic aftertaste leaving us the memory of a round and balanced wine able to be paired with cheeses, red meat, game and fatty fish, even to take simply with someone else. Service temperature 18ºC.

Alma Negra is owned by Ernesto Catena, a fourth generation Mendozan and son of Malbec pioneer Nicolas Catena. Ernesto grew up in Mendoza and being around wine was a natural thing. Over the years he has traveled and lived in other places, earning several university degrees along the way. In 2003 he started Alma Negra from the desire to produce a wine about which little was known. Alma Negra means “dark soul” and the mask on the label is a symbol of a hidden identity. That means we do not know the exact composition of his wines, because he wants them to be judged solely by the tasters perception, not by preconceived ideas of the grapes or style.

The wines are produced from grapes coming from vineyards owned by the winery which are located in some of Mendoza’s premium regions, as well as high quality vineyards of growers. Alma Negra was founded in 2003 by Ernesto Catena.

The 2014 vintage was the most challenging in memory, but has nevertheless enabled us to produce high quality wines that give immense pleasure. The late ripening of the grapes have made it possible to express the crispness and freshness of the fruit to best effect. What is striking is the high quality of the tannins on the palate: silky, refined and without any sharp edges, albeit with a lower density than in hotter vintages. Le Volte dell’Ornellaia is a balanced, harmonious and very drinkable wine thanks in particular to the beautiful Merlots of 2014.
